Jennifer Sands

I am a creative elementary school teacher with diverse experience in education. I grew up in NYC, moved to Colorado in my 20s and never left the West. The lifestyle in the Rocky Mountains is much better suited to my spirit. I have well over 10 years experience teaching students with diverse needs. I have  been a classroom Elementary, Gifted and Talented and English as a Second Language Teacher.  I transitioned to supporting students as a private tutor in all subjects, specializing in early literacy instruction. I am committed to fostering a safe learning environment where risk-taking is nurtured through empathy and structured support. I have my Professional Colorado Teaching License and am trained in Orton-Gillingham. I weave many strategic and engaging approaches to teach and foster a love of reading! I also have a M.S in Wildlife biology. I studied wolves in Yellowstone National Park, living there for 3 years. When not teaching kids, you will find me in nature with my animals and friends, hiking and traveling.

About

Jennifer

What was your path to becoming a provider?

It has been a winding journey as I am always learning and growing as a teacher. I began as an environmental educator, connecting kids to nature and then a lower elementary classroom teacher, then an ESL teacher and then a reading specialist focused on emergent literacy. I worked for myself for many years and was looking for a company to join to work as part of a larger community and found Parallel and am so excited to learn and grow with them!

Why are you passionate about helping students with learning differences?

I am passionate about helping all students because I love getting to know each individual child and celebrating their unique gifts.

What advice would you give to a family who is on the fence about signing up for a learning assessment (or counseling/therapy)?

I would encourage them to learn more about the process and acknowledge that starting anything new can feel a bit scary. I think they will feel the encouragement once they enlist support from Parallel become part of a team working together to help their child.
